Rape is the worst form of sexual harassment. If S.A. had a law on sexual harassment do you think we could prevent some rapes from happening?

Who is REACH?

REACH was founded in response to the high prevalence of sexual harassment and genderbased violence in the Western Cape’s farming communities and lack of support services. 2005 marked the beginning of REACH's journey in its attempts at eradicating these social ills in rural farm communities.

Why REACH?

Why focus on sexual harassment in rural farming communities? The story is an interesting one...

Vision & Mission

to sensitize rural farming communities on the issues of sexual harassment and sexual violence for an empowered community free from these human rights abuses

“As REACH’s Interim Director it is my responsibility to ensure that as a team we merge all of our combined experiences, knowledge, passions, dedication, convictions, drives and ambitions as the core ingredients for our projects, activities and all that we do, to advocate against the injustices faced by women; inspire others to care for and believe in themselves, to stand up for their rights and to care for their communities.”

Claudia is the Interim Director for REACH.  Claudia’s great passion and care for people has brought her to work and volunteer at several counselling and welfare institutions over the years.  Claudia holds an Honours degree in Psychology; a Bachelors Degree in Sociology and Psychology; an Advanced Higher Certificate in Counselling and further training on Family and Relationship Counselling; Working with Children; Trauma Counselling; Death & Bereavement & Trauma, Rape Counselling, Trauma Resilience; Counselling and Communication, HIV/AIDS and Therapeutic Interventions with Adult Survivors of Sexual Abuse; Hypnotherapy and Human Trafficking.  While working at REACH she completed an NPO Management course and was awarded the recognition of being the top student in her class.  Before co-founding REACH she was a Trauma Counsellor for Absa Bank; and a support worker and counsellor for the Community Intervention Centre (CIC), amongst others.  Claudia has also volunteered at Lifeline/Childline and Friends of Valkenberg.  In 2009, Claudia took a year of sabbatical leave and worked at a shelter for abused women and a Domestic Violence Centre in London.  Her aim was to learn best practice models in the UK’s charity sector, and to raise further awareness and garner support of REACH’s work in South Africa.

Admin- istrator: Nafeesa Solomon

“Being part of REACH thus far has been a journey of memorable experiences and learning. I am proud to be part of a team who is all about passion, compassion and all in the name of greater good. Realistically nothing is a bed of roses as they say, and this applies to REACH as well, however, I believe that no person grows without trials and this is the journey you take when you are part of the REACH team, we grow holistically as individuals and as an organization. This is the place where your work can raise your adrenalin, where you can laugh when you actually thought you didn’t have the time to, and a place where you accept people for who they are and genuinely care for each other. I believe REACH can achieve its potential as we surely have the right soul on board.”

Nafeesa has been an administrator and PA/Executive Assistant since 1999 where she began her career working in the corporate sector. In 2006 however she became passionate about wanting to work in the field of community services and later that year was employed as an Administration Officer at Positive Muslims an NGO in the field of HIV/AIDS. During her two-year service with Positive Muslims she gained much experience in the day to day running of NGO’s and became more eager to play a greater role in joining in the struggle to eradicate social evils/injustices. At her first encounter withREACH in 2008 she knew that this was where she was meant to be. Nafeesa believes that all walks of life must be treated justly. Her principals in life are not to be judgemental, have compassion, and not discriminate regardless. She believes love and care is the antidote to all social problems. In the time that she has been at REACH she has come to find all these principals eagerly practiced which creates an amazing environment that encourages great teamwork.

“I started at REACH as a volunteer in June 2008 and became full time in April 2009. I really enjoy working with the special people in our team…..I have learned so much during the time I’ve been here and I am still learning something new every day. I spend most of my day here at the office it almost feels like home .”

Kim Lockman joined REACH in 2008 as a volunteer. 8 months later after receiving recognition for her hard work and dedication REACH managed to gather sufficient funds to employ her. Kim continues to shine in her role and is a valued member of staff. Before joining REACH Kim had volunteered at the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children; Muslim Aids Programme and served as a youth trainer at schools. Kim has received training in Administration and in 2006 also completed a Chef Assistant course.
