Types of Sexual Harassment

There are several types of Sexual Harassment:

  • verbal: sexual jokes, teasing or phone calls
  • physical: touching, pinching, cornering, leaning over, actual or attempted sexual assault and rape
  • non-verbal: sexual looks, gestures, letters, sms’s, emails or materials (often pornographic)
  • secondary harassment: a victim is sexually harassed by more than one person because she is seen as an “easy score”
  • victimisation:  victim is punished or intimidated because she has laid a charge of sexual harassment
  • quid pro quo: offers for a date or sex in exchange for a raise, job promotion, increase in grade, etc. Generally the harasser is someone in a position of authority
  • a poisoned or hostile environment: environment where there is lots of sexual harassment that makes some people within that environment, uncomfortable
  • sexual favouritism: person who is sexual compliant gets special treatments, promotions at work, etc., while the other person does not get promotions because he or she is not sexually compliant.
