Rape is the worst form of sexual harassment. If S.A. had a law on sexual harassment do you think we could prevent some rapes from happening?

Who is REACH?

REACH was founded in response to the high prevalence of sexual harassment and genderbased violence in the Western Cape’s farming communities and lack of support services. 2005 marked the beginning of REACH's journey in its attempts at eradicating these social ills in rural farm communities.

Why REACH?

Why focus on sexual harassment in rural farming communities? The story is an interesting one...

Vision & Mission

to sensitize rural farming communities on the issues of sexual harassment and sexual violence for an empowered community free from these human rights abuses

our history

REACH was founded in 2005 as a response to a research project called Sexual Harassment at Work on Farms in the Overberg/Western Cape Region conducted by the former Director of REACH, Joanie Fredericks, that exposed the high prevalence of sexual harassment, sexual violence, domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse and HIV/AIDS in the Southern Western Cape’s farming rural communities, while also exposing the lack of programs and absence of support services to address and assist those whose lives are affected by these social problems.    A follow-up research study, to re-investigate the incidences of and contributing factors to sexual harassment on farms, conducted by REACH in 2006 revealed that the situation facing farm workers and rural farming communities was more severe than it had been before with young female children below the age of 13 being the main targets of sexual violations.  In 2010 REACH celebrated its fifth year of existence and took the opportunity to pause and refine its strategy and direction for the next five years.  During the past two years, REACH has formed partnerships with organisations like SAFAIDS (Southern African Aids Information Dissemination Services) which highlights the linkages between gender based violence, culture and HIV/AIDS.  Other partners that REACH have been involved with include but are not limited to the Western Cape Network on Violence against Women and the Women’s Legal Centre who takes up identified cases of sexual harassment and sexual violence on behalf the organisation.

vision & mission

REACH has made great strides and affected positive changes since inception in our mission to sensitize rural farming communities and other relevant stakeholders on the issues of sexual harassment and sexual violence through the implementation of programmes that encourage ethical, social, personal awareness and development.  Our vision is that of an empowered community that is socially aware, independent, responsible, self-caring and free of sexual harassment and sexual violence.

project activities

Sexual harassment and sexual violence are complex social problems which cannot be dealt with single, simple strategies. REACH believes that the key to effectively and efficiently address these issues is to broach it within a holistic framework.  REACH has 6 main project activities:
• To provide training and awareness raising on sexual harassment and sexual violence (and their interlinking factors),
• To establish & provide counselling support services,
• To establish & provide legal support services,
• To research contributing factors to sexual harassment and sexual violence,
• To develop sexual harassment and sexual violence campaigns,
• To promote changes of restrictive policies and advocate for a law on sexual harassment
